If you are headed for the legal profession then you are about to head into some challenging experiences. Law School is not just for Lawyers, many students whose career paths take them into the business or politician's world. Several individuals will take the education they receive and use it to help educate others.
What does it entail to get the legal education? Many obtain at either graduate level or undergraduate level a first degree in law. It is mandatory for prospective lawyers to pass Vocational courses before they can enter practice. They must have higher academic degrees.
Legal education includes higher degrees such as doctorates for some of the more advanced academic studies. The United States recognize the Juris Doctor. This is a degree given to a person when they have successfully completed Law School. The Juris Doctor is also known as doctor of Jurisprudence and is most often the degree generally awarded by schools of law. California is the only state, which does not require this to gain admission to the bar. It has a law office study option. An individual cannot practice law without getting a license, which is obtained through passing the bar exam.
In the early 1900s, an individual was not required to have a law degree from school so they could get a license to practice law. Almost all lawyers spend time working on an apprenticeship for a time-honored attorney for a certain amount of time. By the mid 1900s many states were now requiring a law degree from a law school. This was set up by legislatures to help raise values of practicing lawyers and to keep down the number of lawyers.
Master of laws is the degree, which is offered by many Universities and Colleges. The 1960s brought about the change in the requirements for the law degree. Juris Doctor was replaced by the Master of Law degree, which are awarded by law schools. Requirements for the Juris Doctor differ from school to school. In general, requirements consist of completing a certain amount of class hours. The individual must also take certain required courses in their first year of law school.
It is required by all states that students have to pass a course on the Professional Responsibility if they want to receive a Juris Doctor degree. After completing the undergraduate degree in a particular field such as a bachelor's degree, the student is considered to have a first professional degree program under their belts. Most United States Lawyers hold their bachelor's degree in such fields as social sciences and the humanities. Legal study is available at only a small number of institutions as an undergraduate study.
In the United States, the law schools are generally a sovereign entity within a larger university. It is the duty of the lawyers to hold to the rules of professional conduct. Lawyers are responsible for upholding the laws of professional court, which are governed by legislature. Violators of these laws of professional conduct are disciplined by the states and are punishable by either a lecture or could result in disbarment.
